It’s no secret that I like to plan things. If you don’t know where you’re headed in life, you’re basically living day by day. To some, this is enough. Not for me. I like to have goals, and dreams, and I like to plan how I’m going to get there.
My ultimate goal in life is to be the best wife and mum I can be. But to do that, I need to be the best me I can be. I need to be happy, for my family to be happy.
That’s one of the reasons why I started this blog. I can express myself and make sense of my thoughts at the same time. It’s an outlet I can see now that I’ve needed for a long time. It’s not going to bring in any money though, and that’s fine. That’s not why I write.
But I’ve planned to take a full 12 months of maternity leave from my full time work this time around, which will be tough because the money stops coming in after a while. It doesn’t make sense for me to go back earlier, as the cost of child care exceeds what will come in. And on a personal level, I want to be there for both of my kids as much as I can.
Having already started maternity leave two weeks ago, I’ve had time to think about what I can do away from my full time work career wise. Something that will contribute financially to the family over the next year, but might also become something more serious down the road. I want something that I’m proud of. Something that is mine that I can own, and pour my heart and soul into. Just like this blog.
So many mums go through this same thing. They’ve worked so hard all their lives ‘pre kids’ to then find themselves stuck once they become mums. They can’t go back to work in the same role or capacity as before, or they can’t go back at all. And so they’re forced to find other ways to contribute to the household financially. If you’re an Instagram addict, like me, you’ll see so many home based businesses run by mums. There’s everything from wooden toys, home décor, prints and kids clothing, all made by these mums who work around school pick-ups, kids naps, keeping a household, grocery shopping and end up staying up after midnight each night to answer emails and pack orders.
These mums are inspiring, and I want to be like them.
I started an online store about a year ago now that’s been ticking along. It’s not a huge success but it isn’t a failure. Orders are coming through and I love keeping up with the social media side of marketing. I just haven’t had the time to devote the energy it requires and deserves.
It all started when I found it hard to find comfy on trend kids clothing that truly resembled Ben’s personality. He’s an adventurous little boy who loves to get dirty in the mud, but is a big city life kid at heart. He needs something he can comfortably run in, while still looking totally cool. There are so many amazing children’s designers out there, offering quality product at affordable prices – but they’re all based internationally. And so I created an online destination in Australia where mums like myself could get their hands on these brands without the hassle of international shipping costs and delivery times.
The store has grown since I first launched it, at least in my head. I want more. I want my own stuff and so I am using this time while on maternity leave to get it done. I’m clearing the current stock, refreshing the brand and bringing in my own designs. The behind the scenes stuff is crazy at the moment and I could not be more excited.
Owning this blog and the online store, I feel I can express myself creatively, apply what I have learnt over the last 10 years professionally, and see the results from start to end. I’m doing something I love, and if I can contribute financially, then that’s an added bonus.
I want to show my soon to be two boys that by working hard you can achieve anything you want. You need to have dreams and plans and you need to go after them. It’s OK to dream big. In fact, I want them to.
I’m dreaming big and I’m not afraid to admit it. Finally, I have clarity. I can see what the next 5 years can look like and I’m totally ready. I’m a wife, a mama and a woman, who blogs and owns an online store. That’s pretty cool if you ask me!
Note to self- Less blogging about working, more actual working!
