My naturopath changed my life.

I was at my besties house one night for a catch up when I noticed that she had an almost strange bubbly happy energy about her. Not that she’s normally NOT happy, but this was like she had just had 4 coffees and was ready for anything! On the other hand, I was tired, cranky and hungry!

She tells me that she’s started to see a naturopath who after a whole lot of tests and chats about how she lives her life, had put her on a personalised detox which would kick start a healthier more wholesome wellbeing. I had no idea what a naturopath was at that stage, thinking she’s turned into one of those new age green tea drinkers, BUT, I secretly wanted in! So I booked an appointment.

Since my very first appointment, my naturopath made me feel like I was her only client. She explained what naturopathy was and how it could help me feel better. There were a lot of big words that I didn’t understand so a lot of questions on my part. Essentially though, her aim was to make my tummy healthy, so my brain would follow. Anything that would add to this journey I was on of finding true happiness in myself, I was ready for.

We spoke about what I wanted to get out of seeing her. I told her I wanted more energy to play with my 4 year old son, I wanted to not need 4 cups of coffee a day to keep my energy levels up, and I wanted to fall pregnant after trying for over 6 months. Remember that I also suffer from OCD related anxiety so any ‘plan’ I was on needed to coincide with cognitive therapy that was now part of my daily life.

We made simple changes to my diet, and I started to take some supportive remedies to help keep me calm and also lift my energy levels. Within two weeks, I was feeling the happiest I had felt in a very long time. I had energy, I had clarity, and I was able to sleep on my back- something I unexplainably hadn’t been able to do since I had my son. I was also down to one coffee a day as I found I didn’t actually ‘need’ coffee to get me through the day.

She took the time to get to know me and my individual circumstances. She made sure I knew why she was doing what she was doing and why I needed to do what I needed to do, to reach the desired outcome, every step of the way. She taught me everything I needed to know about wellness and about living a whole life. Her passion was driven by results and it was contagious. She was supportive, encouraging and never judged my life choices – if anything, she helped me realise that life isn’t about putting pressure on myself to be perfect, just to do small things that help made a big impact.

A few months back we started a pre conception plan. We made changes to my morning routine to allow time to focus on gratitude and shifting my thoughts from what my ‘to do list’ was for the day, to what was the one thing I was going to do to that day to keep me grounded. I don’t know what exactly it was, but I fell pregnant! I had been trying for almost a year at that point, but I fell pregnant within the second cycle of our pre conception plan.

She was then there for my first few weeks of pregnancy, not only continuously trying and testing what foods sat well with me to help with my nausea, but also to listen to me whinge and let me cry it out. She was also there to help me make further changes to my diet once I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Something I didn’t understand but was fearful of. She explained why I was diagnosed, what it meant, and how ‘normal’ it was these days, better than any doctor had at that point.

I have gone through some really devastating and even traumatic life changing experiences in my life with losing my mum to cancer, other health issues and anxiety. I’ve always been the ‘carer’ and took responsibility to put the needs of my loved ones before mine. But my naturopath has shown me that it doesn’t take a lot of time and I shouldn’t feel guilty to make my wellness a priority. In just a few months, she has helped change my life. I will not be feeling this calm, happy, clear and focused without her guidance. I also know that I would not be pregnant either!

If you’re lacking energy, wanting to make some diet changes, or just want to see how a naturopath can really help you, I honestly recommend you take that first step and book an appointment. It’s not a lemon detox, it’s not about meal replacements, or losing weight. It’s about making small changes to live a whole life full of clean food and perhaps some supportive remedies so that your tummy can be happy. In turn, you’ll be happier and healthier than ever, and you’ll pretty much feel it right away.
